Sitting Pretty Pendants

It's been a while since I blogged but I'm still here! I have just started a new part-time teaching job and with that, and my other part-time job and all that goes with being a mum and a wife, my jewellery making has had to take a back seat. I still go to bed thinking about designs as I fall asleep (which I find much more relaxing than thinking 'What do I have to do tomorrow?') but those designs will have to wait a while, whilst my life settles down.

Anyway, here is a pendant I made a couple of weeks ago and have just listed in all my online shops (Etsy, Folksy and Dawanda). It is based on my 'Sitting Pretty' earrings I made last year but this time with a sparkling gemstone adorned in the centre of the fine silver flower.

SITTING PRETTY IN GREEN
Peridot Fine Silver Flower & Hammered Circle Pendant

Here's another Sitting Pretty Pendant I made for myself. I love rhodolite garnet. It seems to satisfy my need to wear pink without being too 'girly' and co-ordinates beautifully with my ever-growing purple wardrobe! (I have a current addiction to purple clothes - any shade considered).

Jewelled Flowers - tutorial and jewellery for sale

It's been a while, but here's what I have been busy with recently... my fifth tutorial which is entitled 'Jewelled Flowers'.

You can buy this tutorial for $5.00 from my Etsy shop or from Jewelry Lessons. It is also for sale for £3.00 in my Folksy shop.

Some of the jewellery that inspired this tutorial is also for sale in my Etsy and Folksy shops and will be listed over the next day or so.

Lilac Amethyst Five Bead Flower Pendant

I've been working on this design for a couple of months on and off, in between all the other busy things that go on in my life, trying to work out the best way to secure the beads and petals. Then a few days ago I had a 'Eureka' moment and voila... my 'Five Bead Flower' design is ready to be shown to the world!

Lilac Amethyst Five Bead Sterling Silver Wire Flower Pendant

I've got lots of variations of this design to show you but just need to find the time to take the photos. My next project will be to turn this design into my next tutorial. Watch this space for further information about that...

Colour Combo Pendant

Last year I made a very colourful pendant I named 'Colour Me Happy' made from multi-gemstone rondelles woven around a handmade circular pendant. Here is an alternative version I have just made with a smaller colour palette of one of my favourite colour combinations: purple and pink.

COLOUR COMBO
Amethyst, Pink Amethyst, Rubellite Garnet & Rose Quartz
Woven Sterling Silver Circle Pendant

Cinderella Pendant

Not all my jewellery has a name or even a story behind it but this pendant certainly has...

CINDERELLA
Pink Amethyst Spiral Loop Teardrop Frame Sterling Silver Pendant

... Initially, this started out as a much more simple frame for a smaller bead of a different gemstone. It was actually going to be one of a pair of earrings. Then I wondered what it would look like with more spirals and loops around the frame... I liked it, but then decided it was too much for an earring and better suited to a pendant. Then at the last minute, I swapped the bead to this plump pink amethyst briolette... it was a perfect fit... as if I had made it for that bead all along... It was just like Cinderella trying on the glass slipper!

Princess Zara Pendant

Following similar design principles to my Cinderella Pendant, I made this necklace for my friend, Zara's birthday. In keeping with the fairytale theme, the necklace found its name easily...

Amethyst Spiral Loop Teardrop Frame Sterling Silver Necklace

Circles; two ways

Both hammered; both fine silver. Single hand formed, sanded and fired in the kiln. Double circles are torch fused, hand hammered and tumbled. Bon apetit!

Wrapped Crystals

Simple with a touch of bling.

Sun Came Out: New Pics

I'm liking these bracelets

More mixed bracelets.  The sterling silver chain is quite hefty; great weight & feel.  Technique tip:  I have been oxidizing chain  (before piecing together) with hard boiled egg.

Busy, Busy, Busy

Only one week out; busy hands ... Why does inspiration, creativity, come at busy times?  Wish I could bottle it up for those slump days.  Working on finishing up many pieces, display, packaging ....  Looking forward to next week!

Running in circles ...

Initials Necklace

My take on the 'mama jewelry'. Initial charms (fine silver) can represent initial of each child, family member, dog - even spell out a name; you decide!

Each initial is handmade: formed, sanded, kiln-fired, polished and hand hammered.

I like necklace worn long, on a 24" sterling silver ball chain, dog-tag style; however 16"/18" length are also available.

Open Studio

I am hosting a day to pop in and browse Good To Go Jewelry pieces for sale. After a (bit of a) break from madly prepping for the (successful) trunk show I'm back at it again this week.

Last One ... (for the season)

Home Boutique in Rockridge this evening.

Buying diamonds online!!!

Many people will be surprised by the fact that buying diamonds online is at times, much safer than buying them from a store. Pushy salespeople make is extremely difficult and annoying to make an informed decision of buying diamonds as this decision requires time and thought. However, shopping at malls for diamonds makes it almost impossible to think straight and more often than not your opinion gets biased by the gimmicky sales pitch diamond sellers deliver to you. All you need for buying diamonds on the internet is a computer with an internet connection, a credit card and basic knowledge about diamonds.

Certifications are extremely important to understand when you are buying diamonds. For buying diamonds online, it will help if you learn abbreviations that are commonly used in diamond trade. AGS and GIA certifications are very common. AGS stands for American Gem Society that authorizes wholesalers and retailers to attest a diamond's quality. GIA stands for Geological Institute of America that provides more or less the same service. This quality assured by these certifications determines what you should be paying for a certain kind of diamond. Look for diamond wholesalers and retailers that have a high ranking online. Go for companies that have a sizeable inventory. There are different websites where you can check for the reputation of a certain vendor – like Better Business Bureau.

More Fall Bracelets and Earrings

It's the busy season; fall is here, winter is on its way, and that means that Thanksgiving and Christmas are just around the corner.  Sometimes it's hard to get a moment to take a breath much less write a blog post, but I am quite overdue and here are a few new pieces I've got to get on the site.
The aquamarine bracelet, above, gets a kick from saucy lampwork beads that echo the colours of the aquamarines and black chalcedony and add a soupcon of hot pink for fun.  Of course, three colours means that the bracelet can also be worn with more outfits. The bracelet that you see below is what I call a "one-note" bracelet: it has three rows of pretty faceted prehnite rondelles that comprise most of the bracelet, but a large lampwork glass bead adds special interest.  This exquisite lampwork bead is one of our best made by a master lampworker; it introduces the only other colour (besides the sterling silver) in the bracelet.  A special Israeli clasp features a tulip on the ring part of the toggle; a largish sterling flower charm hangs between the prehnite and the lampwork.  This bracelet looks prettier in person since for some reason the prehnite is really hard to photograph so that I get its real colour; it seems to wash out in the photos, but this one is finally close to the original.
The Salvation Bracelet below is one that I've made a series of; it's called Magdalene, and it's made with precious as well as semi-precious gemstones.  This bracelet has black chalcedony, a large faceted ruby nugget, a smooth sapphire nugget, gorgeous rock crystal, a large faceted emerald nugget, and a large faceted citrine nugget.  Two beads on either side  have a relief cross on both sides.  A scalloped toggle clasp is the closure; a small prayer box hangs beside it.  Although the prayer box is small, it still opens and allows you to put a prayer on a small piece of paper into it.
